"Code Blue"
Well kiddies its about 3am and about an hour ago I experienced my first code blue. Usually when I hear that phrase over the intercom it is for a unit that I am not working on so you can imagine how suprised I was when I found out that it was in a room right down the hall from me. Thankfully the patient did survive and is being more closely monitored in the ICU. I wasn't sure of the whole story but basically he started vomiting, aspirated on that vomit, and went into cardiac arrest for a short time. The patient is a 32 year old male who has Cerebral Palsy and is pretty non responsive to begin with which makes it harder to assess how he is doing in an acute situation such as this. I just pretty much stood and observed. I was also able to run and get supplies as they needed them so it was cool to be able to "get involved" as well. I must say that after viewing this incident I have come to the realization that we have some talented people at this hospital. Everyone seemed to know exactly where to go and what to do. Each had a specific job and conducted it to the best of their ability. I am the kind of person that is all about teamwork so it really thrills me inside when I see so many talented people working together in one place. Other than that its been a pretty slow night. However, it is nice to officialy be able to be on schedule and not get tired anymore at night. Welp I need to check vital signs in a few so I best be rollin.
